Chris Hipkins has rightly highlighted the pressure spiralling council rates are placing on families, with Labour putting the cost at $1,001 a year.
Responding, Taxpayers’ Union spokesman James Ross said:
“Rates bills climbed 34 percent over the last council term alone. Hipkins is right that families are being hammered in the back pocket, but what is he going to do about it?
“There is a rates cap Bill before Parliament right now. It isn’t perfect, but it’s better than no cap at all. Will Hipkins commit Labour to supporting the Bill all the way and getting a rates cap into law?
“It’s easy to complain about soaring rates bills. The real test is whether Labour is willing to do anything to stop them.”
