The Taxpayers’ Union has today launched We Can’t Afford Labour, its largest-ever pre-election advertising campaign, warning voters not to forget Labour’s record on household costs, tax, public spending and government services.
The first advertisement focuses on food prices under the last Labour-led Government, when food-price inflation reached its highest annual rate in more than three decades.
A new advertisement will be released twice a week in the lead-up to voting on 7 November.
Taxpayers’ Union spokesperson Tory Relf said:
“Labour wants voters to believe that ‘better starts now’. But for many Kiwi families, the last Labour Government meant grocery bills rising, taxes going up and household budgets coming under sustained pressure.
“Food prices surged to their highest annual increase in more than three decades. That is not an abstract statistic – it means less food in the trolley, fewer dollars left at the end of the week and more families having to make impossible choices
“Labour can make whatever promises it likes during this election campaign. Before voters believe them, they deserve to remember what those promises cost last time
“This campaign will put Labour’s record under the microscope, issue by issue, using official public data. The numbers are clear, and they make grim reading for Kiwi households.”
The campaign will examine Labour’s record across the issues that matter most to taxpayers, including:
- the cost of living
- public spending and debt
- tax
- health
- education
- government services
The first advertisement is available to view at https://www.taxpayers.org.nz/wcal_costs.
The We Can’t Afford Labour website brings together advertisements from the Taxpayers’ Union and other organisations participating in the initiative. Further advertisements will be released at WeCantAffordLabour.nz throughout the campaign.
