The Taxpayers’ Union is questioning Labour's commitment to transparency after its 2026 election manifesto points to considering Official Information Act recommendations, despite Chris Hipkins previously backing extending the Act to Parliament.
Taxpayers’ Union Investigative Lead, Rhys Hurley, said:
“Just two weeks ago, Chris Hipkins told voters he supported extending the OIA to Parliament. Now Labour’s manifesto appears to have watered that support down to merely considering reform recommendations."
"These look like weasel words from the Labour leader. Quick to back transparency when the public is watching, but when it comes to putting that commitment in writing, all voters get is a watered-down statement buried on page 94 of a 101-page manifesto."
“If Chris Hipkins wants to lead a government that actually takes transparency seriously, he must start by making an actual commitment to opening Parliament's books.”
