There are five full time staff and many part-timers on the payroll, but in addition millions are spent each year for entertainment. Chris Hipkins, for gifting up to $140M of taxpayers money to Bluescope Steel, the Australian owners of NZ Steel at Glenbrook, Auckland, in a deal to reduce New Zealand’s carbon emissions by just 1%. It will put NZ Steel at the mercy of electrical power production, with the very real likelihood that in times of drought, when hydro cannot generate enough power and the wind doesn’t blow the turbines, the Huntly coal-fired power station will have to be brought back online, using coal! And all this to prop up an Australian mega-company that could have been regulated to clean up its own act, at its own expense. Just like Kiwis now have to take their own wrapping bags to the supermarkets, after the Labour Government created a huge disadvantage to shoppers yet gave the supermarkets a free pass on not having to provide environmentally better alternatives. $140M seems like a good yardstick to receive a Jonesie raspberry waste award!

I would like to nominate AT for spending well over $3m to build a cycle lane on Upper Harbour Drive in Auckland that it caused 37 serious accidents – both vehicular and cyclist on a road that had a previously excellent safety record with the cycle lanes that were in place. The road was so dangerous that eventually after public pressure, including the Police, emergency services, waste collection and even cyclists AT agreed to remove the dangerous concrete barriers and replaced them with rubber ones. In their wisdom they were then determined to remove it all and start again with a bi-directional cycle lane along with four Swedish tables (speed bumps) that were again voted down by all concerned. AT’s arrogance, and contempt for motorists and cyclists combined was only upstaged by their wanton Easter of tax payers money. It was only through OIA requests that we have managed to get a base costing of the money spent to date, but wait, there is more, they still intend to complete the rest of the road with rubber barriers- this despite three cyclists being seriously injured on the road only last week!! Pure madness, and a text book example of ideology over practicality….
