Why does it cost $50,000 to remove a bureaucrat?

The Taxpayers’ Union is questioning why taxpayers are being hit with massive redundancy bills just to reduce an already bloated public service.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesman James Ross said:

“An average redundancy payout of $52,500 is an extraordinary golden goodbye. Taxpayers should not have to fork out half a year’s average public service salary just to scratch someone’s name off the payroll.”

“As collective bargaining agreements coming up for renegotiation, the Public Service Commissioner needs to get serious about ending the golden goodbye culture that has made starting to remove Labour’s 18,000 extra bureaucrats so expensive.”
