Votes at 16 (2023)

Our campaign fought Labour’s attempt to lower the voting age to 16 for local elections, arguing that such a fundamental change to New Zealand’s democracy should be decided by voters through a referendum, not rushed through Parliament. With the media giving the issue little attention, we blew the whistle through nationwide newspaper and online advertising and publicly pressured the Government not to pass the Bill under urgency.

The pressure worked, and Labour backed down, sending the Bill to the Justice Select Committee instead, and preventing the change from being rushed into law before the 2023 election.
