Voters from the afterlife show postal voting has to go

The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union says allegations of widespread ballot theft and fraudulent voting in Manurewa show why local elections should move to in-person voting.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesman, James Ross, said:

“A letter box will never be as secure as a ballot box. Democratic accountability depends on elections being fair and above board, but if ghosts are voting from beyond the grave then clearly the current checks aren’t working.”

“Nick Smith’s Electoral Reform Group called for a return to secure in-person voting 18 months ago, and Manurewa shows exactly why they were right. We can’t go into the next local elections with voting papers still left lying around in unattended hallways.”
