Trim the Fat to undo Labour’s bureaucratic bloat

The Taxpayers’ Union is welcoming plans to reduce public service staffing by nearly 9,000 roles, but says its Trim the Fat analysis already shows where to start.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Rhys Hurley said:

“After years of bureaucratic bloat, public service bosses are finally being asked to trim the fat. But even at 55,000 staff, the public service would still be almost 8,000 bureaucrats larger than when Labour took office.

“Predictably, the Wellington blob is already dragging its feet, warning of reduced services and ballooning contractor bills.

“Luckily, we’ve already crunched the numbers for them, breaking down staffing growth by occupation within each department.

“We’ve shown where to start trimming. Now it’s time for Wellington to get on with it.”
