The Taxpayers’ Union is calling for Creative New Zealand to be abolished after the agency revealed plans to hand responsibility for distributing up to $40 million a year to a new network of regional organisations.
Taxpayers’ Union spokesman, Rhys Hurley, said:
“Creative NZ has accidentally designed the case for its own abolition. If local organisations can make the funding decisions, send the money straight to our democratically elected councilors and shut the Wellington office.”
“Creative NZ hardly has a spotless record for picking winners. Taxpayers have funded everything from Indigenised Hypno Soundscapes and the Sl*tcracker ballet to $25,000 for drag wig sculpting workshops in Samoa.”
“Councils already exist in every part of the country and already fund local arts and culture. Instead of creating another network of 16 regional funding bodies, abolish the bureaucracy sitting in between.”
