Time to Put Local Elections Under the Electoral Commission

The Taxpayers’ Union says Auckland Council’s decision to move away from postal voting strengthens the case for putting local elections in the hands of the Electoral Commission.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesman, Rhys Hurley, said:

“After the voting ‘irregularities’ in Papatoetoe, Auckland Council was right that the current postal system is not fit for purpose. Yet having every council come up with and pay for its own solution makes little sense.”

“We already have an Electoral Commission responsible for running nationwide elections. It's time the Government gave it responsibility for local elections too.”

“If moving local elections to in person booths gives voters greater confidence in the results, cost should not be an excuse for sticking with the status quo.”
