The Taxation (Annual Rates for 2024-25, Emergency Response and Remedial Measures) Bill

The Taxation (Annual Rates for 2024-25, Emergency Response and Remedial Measures) Bill sets income tax rates for 2024–25 and proposes new ways for the government to respond with tax measures during emergencies. It also includes provisions for data sharing between agencies.

We oppose the proposed tax brackets because they fail to fully adjust for inflation, and we’ve suggested CPI-adjusted alternatives. We support streamlined emergency tax relief but strongly reject giving Inland Revenue Department powers to share taxpayer data for marketing or cross-agency purposes.

Not adjusting for inflation effectively increases taxes on ordinary New Zealanders, eroding their purchasing power. Allowing IRD to share sensitive information undermines privacy and public trust in the tax system.
