Record-low drinking strengthens case for cutting alcohol tax

In response to new figures showing alcohol consumption has fallen to record lows, Taxpayers’ Union spokesperson Tory Relf said:

“As consumption is falling sharply, particularly among young people, the Government must reassess whether current excise rates can still be justified.”

“With drinking at record lows and the hospitality sector already being hammered, continuing to ratchet up alcohol excise only adds to the pressure on businesses for less and less justification.”

“If the Government doesn’t take action, this stops being about recovering costs and starts looking like another convenient cash grab.”
