The New Zealand Taxpayers' Union Incorporated value your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal information. This privacy policy explains how we collect, store, and use the information you provide through our website and related services.
1. Information We Collect
We collect personal information to keep you informed about our activities and campaigns. This includes:
- Contact Information: Email addresses, postal addresses, phone numbers, and other similar details.
- Activity Information: Information about emails sent to us, introductions made (such as using a shared link), and engagement with our petitions or submission tools.
- Website Interaction: We use Google Analytics to track user behaviour on our website, including traffic data, page views, and time spent on our site.
By signing in, signing one of our petitions, using one of our submission tools, subscribing to email newsletters, or contacting us online, you agree to receive communications from us. Information you submit may be used for site customisation.
We also collect data through cookies and tracking technologies to customise and improve your experience on our websites.
2. Cookies and Tracking
Our websites use cookies to optimise your experience and gather traffic data. Cookies are small files stored on your device that allow us to recognise and track your preferences. You can disable cookies through your browser settings, but this may affect your ability to use some features of our websites.
3. How We Store Your Information
Your personal information is stored securely through:
- NationBuilder: We use NationBuilder software to manage supporter and donor data. NationBuilder is a secure platform used by many political organisations in New Zealand and is based in the United States.
- Campaign Engineering: For direct advocacy email campaigns, we use Campaign Engineering, a New Zealand-based system hosted on dedicated AWS servers in Sydney.
- Xero: We use Xero, a New Zealand based accounting software service, to manage our financial systems. Offline donor information is stored here.
- Stripe: Credit card transactions are processed through Stripe - one of the largest credit card processors in the world. Stripe retain certain transaction information.
We retain your personal information until you request its deletion. If you become inactive (i.e., not engaging with our communications or website), we may remove you from our email database after a period of 3 to 6 months. We will notify you one last time before removing your information.
4. Data Security
We prioritise the security of your personal information. Our systems are protected with industry-standard encryption and restricted access. All personnel with access to personal data have signed Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) to ensure confidentiality. To the greatest extent possible, we enforce 2FA (or three-factor, where available) security measures across all of our systems that store or process personal information.
5. Sharing Your Information
We do not sell, share, give or transfer your data to third parties. However, we may share information with trusted third parties when necessary to execute or optimise campaigns. These third parties must comply with New Zealand’s privacy laws and maintain security standards at least as robust as our own.
6. Your Rights
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to:
- Access your personal information.
- Update or correct any inaccuracies.
- Request the deletion of your data.
If you would like to exercise any of these rights, please contact our Privacy Officer at team [at] taxpayers.org.nz.
7. Data Retention
We will retain your personal information for as long as necessary for the purposes outlined in this privacy policy or until you request its removal. You can opt out of our email communications at any time by using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of all of our email blasts and newsletters.
8. Data Breach Protocol
In the event of a data breach, we will promptly assess the situation and notify affected individuals and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner as required by law.
