The Parliament Bill is legislation to streamline and modernise the legal framework governing Parliament, including security and how public funds are used by members. It presents an opportunity to strengthen transparency and accountability across parliamentary operations.
We support the Bill’s overall intent but push for stronger transparency measures, including extending the Official Information Act 1982 to parliamentary spending and improving disclosure of member expenses. We also oppose shifting funding oversight away from the New Zealand Treasury to a select committee, which would reduce public visibility.
Without clear visibility of how public money is spent, voters cannot properly hold elected representatives to account. Strengthening disclosure and transparency helps protect trust in Parliament and ensures taxpayer funds are used responsibly.
