The Taxpayers’ Union is questioning how NZ First plans to fund another $600 million a year in Working for Families spending while promising tax relief for small businesses and higher minimum wages.
Taxpayers’ Union spokeswoman, Ella Dickson, said:
“Winston Peters wants to cut taxes for small businesses while piling on more spending. Where’s the money coming from?
“Pushing up the minimum wage risks pricing inexperienced workers out of jobs when unemployment is already at decade-long highs. Making it more expensive to hire is the last thing struggling jobseekers need.
“NZ First is promising businesses a tax break with one hand while pushing up their costs with the other. If Winston Peters wants to index something to inflation, start with income tax brackets so Kiwis aren’t taxed more just because their wages rise.”
NZ First’s latest promise adds another $600 million a year to its spending commitments, pushing its total past $50 billion on the Taxpayers’ Union’s Bribe-O-Meter.
