NZ First Levels Up Gaming Corporate Welfare

The Taxpayers’ Union is slamming NZ First’s promise to expand taxpayer subsidies for the video gaming industry through the Game Development Sector Rebate and Centre of Digital Excellence (CODE), despite millions already being funnelled into the sector.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesperson, Rhys Hurley, said:

“If the gaming industry is already generating a billion dollars a year in revenue, why does it need millions more in taxpayer funding to keep feeding the machine?”

“NZ First wants to double the rebate from 20 to 40 percent, increase the maximum claim from $3 million to $10 million, and boost CODE’s annual funding to $7 million by 2028.”

“Growth doesn't come from politicians picking winners and handing out subsidies. If this billion-dollar industry cannot stand on its own two feet, how long are taxpayers expected to keep propping it up?”
