Poll: Should councils be given new abilities to tax?

Imagine paying taxes such as GST, fuel and income taxes to your local council as well as to the Government. That's what Local Government New Zealand, the lobby group for the councils, want you to support - in addition to rates!

New Zealand’s average rates bill has doubled in the last 20 years, tracking at twice the rate of inflation. We say that instead of promoting new abilities to tax local councils should focus on cutting costs and providing value for money.

Should councils be given new powers to impose local GST, fuel and income taxes?

Yes to new taxes - council's aren't able to raise enough using rates and user charges so we should let them tax in other ways. No new taxes - rates are enough, councils should live within their means.
