Labour’s accounting trick doesn’t make student debt disappear

The Taxpayers’ Union says Labour’s promise to wipe 10 percent off eligible student loansis a $583 million election bribe that would be dumped onto taxpayers.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Rhys Hurley said:

“Labour is trying to buy back voters with taxpayers’ money. But writing off student debt doesn’t make it disappear. It simply shifts another $583 million onto taxpayers.”

“Taxpayers already subsidise tertiary education and interest free student loans, while graduates generally have higher earning potential. Why should tradies, farmers and others who never went to university be forced to pick up even more of the bill?”

“Government debt is already more than $142,000 per household. Shifting debt from graduates onto taxpayers does nothing to make that burden disappear.”
