The Taxpayers’ Union is questioning how Labour List MP Dan Rosewarne will keep his free community BBQ in Rangiora this Saturday free of campaigning, just two days before voting opens.
The Labour-branded flyer was also funded by Parliamentary Service.
Taxpayers’ Union spokesman, Rhys Hurley, said:
“Are we really expected to believe that a Labour MP handing out sausages just two days before voting opens won't influence anyone’s vote? Taxpayers deserve to know whether this is a genuine community event or election campaigning dressed up as one.”
“Simply handing out food isn’t illegal, but providing food for the purpose of influencing someone’s vote could cross the line into treating. How has Rosewarne ensured there will be no campaigning at this BBQ?”
“We also know taxpayers funded the advertising, but are they paying for the sausages too? Parliamentary funding is there to support MPs in doing their jobs, not to bankroll election campaigns. Taxpayers deserve clarity on who’s paying and what safeguards are in place to avoid any funny business.”
