The Public Service – Government and Councils included, who think that New Zealand’s hard earned wages are theirs to squander on ludicrous wasteful projects including their own wages and indulgences.

Christchurch City Council for spending around $950,000 to build a groundkeeper’s facility at the Hagley Oval Cricket ground. This building is about 100sq. m, has a lower level equipment storage area, and an upper level for work staff occupation. This build cost, of course involves no ground purchase (normally about half of a house build). So, around $9,500 per sq. m. for a utility building. I couldn’t find any further information about this, apart from the initial paragraph first reported in The Press. LGOIA may be the only way to eek out confirmation as, if it was me involved, I’d want to keep it hidden too. Perhaps some initial quiet investigation would be appropriate, before the “managers” at the Council circle the wagons to hide the corruption.

Akl Council “trees to stay alive” contractor. This is the caliber of Akl Councils recruitment programme. 26 Jan Council contractor water trees after a week of flood creating deluges in Akl.

Penny Simmonds and the Tertiary Education Commission.

For fixing something that wasn’t broken. Te Pūkenga had turned a corner and was recording surpluses only to have the organisation split up to meet Simmonds personal agenda of keeping SIT operating in her own image. The TEC lackeys, albeit without much choice, were forced to do her bidding and find money that doesn’t exist to pay for the review teams made up of Simmonds acolytes, former failed Polytechnic CE’s, extremely highly paid consultants across the full suite of Big 4 firms, plus a handful of other small operators. No one, not even the Taxpayers Union has given this the airtime it should have received, especially since Simmonds said it would be completed by December 2023 – we’re now two-plus years down the track and …….. nothing. Someone really should get under the hood of this and celebrate the fanciful, lavish, unnecessary expenses thrown at this pipe dream. 10 more CE’s and executive teams, on big salaries, 10 new Boards all getting fees and no improvement in productivity or student outcomes. Truly the Emperor Has No Clothes – my god what a thought….

I would like to nominate Monique Davidson (current chief executive of the Horowhenua District Council and former chief executive of the Central Hawkes Bay District Council) jointly with Alex Walker (immediate past mayor of CHBDC). They both deserve a “Kicking For Touch” Jonesie award, a retrospective honourable mention for civic leaders who sweep things under the carpet until they think they are safely clear of scrutiny.

Under their joint failed leadership Council set out to supposedly strengthen and renovate, at enormous cost to CHB ratepayers, the Waipukurau Public Library building in Kitchener Street over three years, from 2014 to 2017. Once opened, the building only lasted until 29 May 2020 when the Council closed it indefinitely because the earthquake strengthening work they had paid handsomely for (and their own building inspectors had signed off on) in fact did not meet the Code.

Under the much used (by CHBDC) cloak of “commercial in confidence” and “pending legal action” the Council then failed to properly and adequately explain who was accountable, why oversight had failed, what consultants and contractors helped deliver this costly mess, and what it had all really cost. Then in October 2021, once some of the heat had died down, Mayor Walker announced that Council would not pursue legal action against contractors after all. Rates were upped yet again.

29 May this year will mark the 5-year anniversary of this white elephant renovated building. Porky should put a hangi down on the front doorstep to mark the occasion. The building sits empty of books, with plastic covering its front windows, unable to be entered or used. Instead Council, on Davidson and Walker’s watch, acquired and renovated yet another building using more ratepayer funds, and repurposed and renamed it as a woke, bilingually-branded “knowledge & learning hub” (that is mostly devoid of books that are all in storage or now over at Waipawa, and that is really just a local hangout for drifters and aimless youth to play video games and strum guitars, and a place to get your drivers license renewed thanks to Central government funding it as a NZTA agent).

Monique Davidson has since scurried off to a new highly paid job in Horowhenua with no consequences and a glowing reference (despite this failure, the wastewater treatment plant failure, and the Ruataniwha Dam debacle all under her belt). And last year, LGNZ-luvvie Alex Walker was finally dumped by electors. These two have gotten off scot-free, leaving a new mayor, a somewhat new Council (with a few carry overs who failed to exercise proper oversight as this all unfolded), and a new chief executive to try to work out what to do. They most certainly deserve to be inaugural winners of this potentially new category of Jonesie.

GDC CEO Nedine Thatcher Swann for diverting rate payer funds to Maori. Borrowing just to pay the everyday running expenses and borrowing for bullshit schemes for ideological reasons that don’t serve rate payers. I’m a Jonsie, trust me, she’s fucking useless.

Maha Drysdale, Mayor of Tauranga, the amont of wasted money, spend nearly 500k on a coffee machine for the council so his staff didn’t need to leave their offices and then had a new café open below their offices in the new council building they are leasing for a huge amount of money each year, instead of supporting local hospitality businesses

Waka Kotahi, They are spending millions on road barriers, also know as the wire cheese cutters on roads that are becoming no motorways leaving councils and emergency services with roads un repaired, but unable to pass rural vehicles like tractors or having to go somewhere to find a turning bay, before either an ambulance of fire engine can get to people or properties in need of there services.
