Labour leader Chris Hipkins’ claim today that the decision to continue taxpayer funding of gangs “never reached Cabinet” is contradicted by his own Cabinet’s rejection of Justice Minister Kiri Allen's proposal to stop the funding in July 2023, while he was Prime Minister, the Taxpayers' Union can reveal.
Taxpayers’ Union spokeswoman, Ella Dickson, said:
“Hipkins wants Kiwis to believe that millions of dollars being funnelled to the mob was something he ‘wasn’t following’, but the records tell a different story.”
“In July 2023, his Cabinet had the opportunity to stop taxpayer funding going to gangs and chose not to take it. Claiming he cannot remember does not absolve him of responsibility.”
“Hipkins was Prime Minister, a former Police Minister, and the Police Association was publicly warning that the money was going back to gangs. How does he expect taxpayers to believe he ‘wasn’t following’ it?”
“Taxpayers deserve straight answers. Why didn’t Hipkins put a stop to taxpayer funding of gangs in 2023, and how can voters be sure he will he personally commit no future Labour Government will pick up where the last one left off?”
