The Green Party’s proposal to give councils the power to impose a bed levy is a nasty and unnecessary new tax on New Zealanders’ holidays, says Taxpayers’ Union spokesperson Jordan Williams.
“New Zealanders are already being mugged by their council rates. Local authority rates and payments have risen 8.8 percent in the past year – more than twice the overall inflation rate of 4.1 percent. Now the Greens want councils to reach into the pockets of families again every time they book a night away.
“This is not a funding crisis, it is a spending crisis. Councils have more than enough revenue; what they lack is the discipline to prioritise, cut waste, and deliver the basics before demanding another slice of the household budget.
"A bed levy would make holidays more expensive, punish domestic tourism, and give councils a blank cheque to spend even more. New Zealanders don’t need another tax dressed up as local empowerment – they need councils to show some restraint.”
