The Taxpayers’ Union is slamming the Government's compulsory seizure of Greyhound Racing New Zealand's remaining assets, following its forced shut down of the industry.
Taxpayers’ Union spokesman, Rhys Hurley, said:
“The Government has forced the shutdown of an entire industry and is now helping itself to millions in assets built up over generations by those involved. This isn't taxation. This isn't user pays. It's state-sanctioned theft.”
“No matter your views on greyhound racing, the Government has no place seizing an industry's assets simply because politicians have decided it should no longer exist.”
“If the Government can shut down one industry and seize its assets, what is stopping it from doing the same to another? Mining, commercial fishing, and horse racing have all faced the same calls for restrictions or bans. What's stopping this from happening again?”
“Property rights mean nothing if they disappear the moment politicians decide they no longer like your business.”
