Members of Parliament are getting ready to receive a $17,239 pay hike while hundreds of thousands of families earning less than them struggle to pay the bills. With inflation still driving up the cost of living, Government debt spiralling out of control, and an urgent need to rein in spending, it is simply not the time for politician pay hikes. Reaching deeper into your pocket to line theirs is completely out of touch. Dear Prime Minister, 
                                    
The Remuneration Authority has proposed to hike your pay by almost $50,000, and the pay of all other MPs by at least $17,239. 
            
Prime Minister, hundreds of thousands Kiwis are struggling with high inflation, high interest rates and a cost-of-living crisis, yet politicians are planning to reach even deeper into our pockets for a pay you claim to neither need nor want. 
            
Politicians are already trying to pass the buck to the Remuneration Authority, claiming it is a decision for them to make independently. While that may technically be true, there is no reason you must accept it. In fact, Jacinda Ardern legislated a pay freeze for MPs when she was Prime Minister – you should do the same.
            
We note the public comments of you and other MPs that you intend to donate the money to charity. That completely misses the point. This is not about any personal benefit for you or other MPs, it is about those households that are doing it tough. At a time when families are struggling and government spending is out of control, it is completely inappropriate to be piling even more costs onto the everyday taxpayer. 
            
The Government is borrowing $75 million a day. This pay hike will only make our eye-watering debt problem even worse. MPs do not need this pay hike, the money should be left with taxpayers. 
            
When the cost of living crisis is over and the government books are back in the black, only then can we talk about how much are MPs paid. Until then, I urge you and your government to implement a pay freeze for MPs.
