The Draft Government Policy Statement (GPS) on Land Transport sets the Government’s strategic priorities for transport funding and infrastructure. Our submission responds on behalf of New Zealand taxpayers to ensure funding is efficient and accountable.
We support funding core priorities like economic growth, productivity, and road maintenance, including ringfenced pothole repairs. We oppose tax hikes and cross-subsidisation of unrelated projects, and call for a Performance and Efficiency Plan for the NZTA to ensure accountability.
Only 67% of motorist revenue currently goes to roads, with the rest funding projects of limited benefit to road users. Ensuring transparency and value-for-money means infrastructure is delivered efficiently, allowing motorists to keep more of their money while maintaining high-quality roads.
