This is a formal submission on New Zealand’s proposed 2035 climate target, part of the Government’s consultation on emissions reductions for 2031–2035. It responds to plans that would significantly increase the country’s current climate commitments.
We oppose any target more aggressive than the current one, arguing the proposed emissions cuts rely on unrealistic assumptions and lack public support. We call for a lowest-cost approach that protects agriculture and allows for international emissions trading.
Unachievable targets could expose taxpayers to billions in costs and place serious strain on the wider economy, especially rural communities. A more balanced approach ensures New Zealand meets its obligations without risking unnecessary economic damage or disruption.
