Petition: No to registration of cats

A proposal by Dunedin City Council could result in the compulsory registration of cats.

The Council is taking the proposal to Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ), where if agreed by other councils, will become official policy and will go to the Government to have it made law.  In short, they want to see the Government develop legislation for cats similar to the Dog Control Act, including:

  • compulsory microchipping and registration
  • annual fees
  • cat curfews
  • cat rangers to patrol the streets looking for cats off their designated property, or breaching curfew hours (yes really!).

We say this is madness. Another example of local government officials finding expensive solutions to a problem that doesn't exist. If you agree, add your support to the petition below.

"We call on New Zealand's councils to reject the proposal from the Dunedin City Council to introduce a new nationwide policy requesting compulsory registration of cats."
