Taxpayers' Union Launches 2025 Ratepayers' Report for Hawke's Bay Councils
The New Zealand Taxpayers' Union has today published the 2025 edition of the Ratepayers' Report, available at RatepayersReport.nz.
Taxpayers' Union spokesperson, Sam Warren, said:
“The Ratepayers’ Report allows Kiwis to easily compare their local council’s performance and financial position for 2023/24 against others. The report provides transparency for ratepayers, especially important this year as we head into the local government elections.”
“Hawke’s Bay councils show stark contrasts, with Hastings households carrying Council liabilities of around $14,550 each – more than seven times higher than Napier’s $2,016 per household. Hastings also charges the highest residential rates in the region at about $3,560 per household, while Wairoa ratepayers face the lowest bills at $2,749 per household. Meanwhile, both Hastings and Napier employ around 150 staff paid more than $100,000 despite Napier’s smaller size, suggesting heavier management structures or higher pay scales.”
“Ratepayers in Hastings are paying more in both rates and debt, yet staffing levels suggest no greater efficiency. Residents should be demanding answers about why their costs are so much higher.”
“Ratepayers can compare their councils for themselves at RatepayersReport.nz.”
