NZTA have time and again shown they cannot be trusted with your money. Under the previous Government, their staff numbers nearly doubled, yet they still failed to deliver even the most basic of projects on time, or even at all. Now, under their 'safety' camera expansion proposal, they could be trying to take even more of your money.

This proposal simply goes too far and is poorly targeted. It will potentially whack millions of average New Zealand motorists with extra fines, yet will do little do deter those who are the biggest threat to the safety of our roads.

We say that the Transport Minister Simeon Brown needs to put his Transport Agency back in its lane, and get it back to focussing on the timely delivery of roading infrastructure and putting out effective transport policy instead of needlessly taxing millions more Kiwis using an ineffective 'safety' scheme.

Dear Minister Brown,

The New Zealand Transport Agency has proposed quadrupling its camera fleet, which could mean that many more average New Zealanders will be hit by speeding and other traffic fines.

With Kiwis up and down the country already dealing with higher and higher motoring and fuel costs, this proposal simply goes too far.

Minister, if this is about safety, then your agency's proposal doesn’t appear to be nearly targeted enough. The vast majority of New Zealanders are not reckless drivers, but under this proposal, your agency likely be smacking millions more motorists with an extra fee.

What’s worse, is that part of your agency’s proposal is to bring in special cameras that’s sole purpose is to gather revenue and not at all about safety – like monitoring transit lanes.

Mr Brown, you know as well as anyone from your years in opposition that NZTA is bloated, inefficient, and at times more concerned with political activism than with delivering timely roading infrastructure.

NZTA needs to get its priorities straight and ensure that it encourages effective safety policy over putting forward proposals that will only look to gather more and more revenue from the average Kiwi.

Minister, it's up to you to refocus our transport agency.
