Petition: Stop double-charging and keep road tolling fair

Tolling only works when it is fair and transparent.

Under the Government’s proposal for so-called “corridor tolling”, motorists could be charged for roads they never even use, simply for travelling within the same general route.

Worse still, the Bill allows toll revenue to be spent on maintaining existing roads, roads you have already paid for through Fuel Excise Duty and Road User Charges, effectively double-charging motorists.

The Bill also allows toll money to be used on alternative routes and gives the Minister the power to ban heavy vehicles from untolled alternatives, forcing freight onto toll roads and driving up the cost of food, building materials, and everyday goods.

You can read our full submission to the Transport and Infrastructure Committee here.

“I call on the Government to amend the Land Transport (Revenue) Amendment Bill to clearly define corridor tolling, ensure road tolling only pays for new roads, and keep tolling fair, voluntary, and genuinely user-pays."
