The Taxpayers’ Union is New Zealand’s largest political advocacy group, using the power of our 200,000 subscribed members and supporters to fight for a prosperous, low-tax New Zealand with efficient, transparent and democratically accountable government.

We use hard-hitting original research and people power to raise awareness and hold politicians to account.

This Wellington-based role is responsible for overseeing the organisation's work to engage supporters and promote our activities both online and in the field.

Maybe you’re a journalist wanting to get off the fence? You could be a Spad, think tank, or campaign professional, interested in working in another jurisdiction with a newly elected centre-right government. Or you might be a comms professional, media producer, or even a political advisor, who wants to get into a spokesperson or advocacy role yourself.

This role is perfect for someone willing to take the limelight, who presents themselves well, is an effective communicator, and has a passion for making things happen.

You will be the type of person who loves public events, meeting new people and you’re creative in getting a message across. Whether you’re already in New Zealand, or working elsewhere, you’ll be the sort of person who has news and current events in your veins.

The role includes internal and external communications, both written and digital, event management, media liaison and coordination of volunteers when needed. As a part of a small team, flexibility, communication and team work is a must because sometimes we all need to do what we can to deliver what’s required.

The role is based in downtown Wellington but you’ll be free to travel as required, as our supporters are across the whole country. We offer a small, friendly passionate team who are here to make a difference and keep the government to account, our taxes low and a work towards a prosperous New Zealand.

To succeed in the role, you will be:

  • Supportive of our mission: you are passionate about championing lower taxes, less waste and more accountability
  • A media champion: you can present well to media and create collateral efficiently for both traditional and social media
  • Exceptional written communication: your communication style is effective and engaging over an array of topics
  • Super-efficient, organised and nimble: you can handle the intricacies of media needs and event management, prioritising work for the hottest campaign
  • Technology savvy: you have excellent media IT skills are able to pick up new programmes quickly, and have a good understanding of a range of social media platforms
  • Campaign experience: ideally, you will be university qualified, and have some experience working in politics, marketing, campaigns, public affairs or community engagement
  • Politically minded: you live and breathe politics and don’t need to be asked to keep abreast of political developments
