The Taxpayers’ Union is slamming the Government for passing the Local Government (System Improvements) Amendment Bill, saying it fails to fix the problems it was meant to address.
Taxpayers’ Union spokesman James Ross said:
“Either the Government has been run over by officials who opposed fixing the problems from the start, or it simply doesn’t understand local government. Watts set out to fix a broken system, and he’s failed.”
“Councillors are stuck with chief execs vetoing access to the information they need, councils keep the power of general competence and can waste ratepayers’ money without restraint, and the door has been left open for ministers to give unelected appointees voting powers again.”
“Watts promised to put voters back in control of their councils. Instead, he’s left the foxes guarding the henhouse.”
